Hi I thought I may as well upload my short story which I wrote in 2010 and posted on an old site where I had fans also. I will post two chapters in one post and keep adding more as the days go by. I have not edited anything and you get it as it was back in 2010.
THE HEARTBREAK COMMISSION
PROLOGUE: DOWN BUT NOT OUT
I was depressed, no work was coming in and I had bills to pay. I was lonely and had very little company. ZAK my personal security and messaging computer was hardly the most talkative person in the world probably due to the fact he wasn't a real person. He was better than nothing. I asked ZAK via my communications implant to bring up the jobs list from the employment control service. I was a private special investigator but now I was having to look at other lines of work. The list came to me almost straight away on the console monitor, I preferred it that way as every-time it was projected into my mind I found I got a headache afterwards which wouldn't go away for days. I scanned the jobs which were fairly poor. One was for a live model to pose for “real” art which I really didn't fancy, I couldn't stay still for long. Others included a waste disposal expert which I didn't have a clue about and a teacher of “Old School Dancing” which I laughed at as I was fairly poor at any form of dancing let alone the old styles. I gave up.
“ZAK news update, local” I said and within seconds the news come on the monitor. Not much to look at there. The old Cathedral at the heart of the federation of Lincolnshire where the government resided was to finally be given an update, which had been coming for thousands of years. Some had voiced there anger after the last update which many had seen as a compromise and the old Cathedral still stood but now it was to be demolished and renewed as a modern work of art. Other news was that Alexander and Karina Devenports company LIFE-legal implants for everyone-had won a ten year contract to supply the public and the government in the Federation Of Lincolnshire and the Federation Of Manchester which was of no surprise with the resources they had under them. There was a small piece of news that downed me further about the number of unmarried people in the federations. It said only seven percent on average of adults past the age of thirty were unmarried and that meant only seven percent single as couples were forbidden to have a full relationship without been married. This law was put into place hundreds of years ago to supposedly keep the family element strong and reduce crime involving love. I laughed at that thought, I mean what is love? Where is love? How do you love?
CHAPTER 1: FLOWERS
I was bored, fed up and worried. I asked ZAK to bring up my accounts on screen. I figured out that I was due a call from the GPSL, the Government Power Supply Of Lincolnshire and my sister Lucy who was trying as best she could to look after my accounts and banking matters. I new I couldn't pay everything and my security systems took up a lot of power which was needed in my line of work due to the nature of it, that was if I ever got any more work.
I decided I had to get out, I grabbed my light armoured black jacket and got ZAK to ring for a TCSA car, which meant travel car safety assured which was effectively an armoured automatic taxi. It came within five. I left my apartment and entered the car after the car security system had identified me to be who I was. I always used the same company as they had never let me down probably because I had always paid my account on time. I asked to be taken to the Royal Garden Park, an old but picturesque park with a small café, fishing lakes, a children's park, old woods, an outdoor swimming pool and various other entertainment facilities. I often enjoyed coming here when I had things on my mind. My car pulled into one of the parking bays and checked the security in the area before letting me out. I instructed the car to return in a few hours.
I walked towards the entrance where I was greeted by an actual human to my surprise. “Welcome to the Royal Garden Park sir, have a pleasant stay.” she was pretty, my implant came up with her details, they flashed before my eyes. I only let my implant do FDD, flash data display, any other display options would bring on a headache. She was called Anne-Marie Devenport and was married to David Devenport, the last name seemed familiar but I couldn't think from where. They were always married, I hadn't come across a single unmarried human for a number of years. “thank you.” I smiled as I walked through to the DPP which was the data pay point which would scan and check me as I walked , then send me the bill for coming here.
As I entered there were a café, gift shops as well as toilets and an information centre and a map. I strolled over to the map, it had been a long time since I had been here. I took an implant copy which was aloud on certain documents and made my way to the flower garden. The sun was shining and I felt happy for getting out. I wondered around the garden taking in all the beauty. There were a few couples walking hand in hand happy and smiling, I felt lonely, but nothing new there. I took out my camera and took some shots of some of the more unusual flowers like the Blazing Rainbow Star which was shaped like a star but flashed all the colours of the rainbow and the bright camellia which had a hazy pink and red swirl going round and round which emitted a bright hazy light.
I sat down on a old wooden bench which had the words, “for the deceased David Robertson who gave us such beauty from his research.” I asked the implant to show me David Robertson and added the keyword flowers. It flashed me his details, he had been married to Mega and had two children from a previous marriage and another two with his current wife, he had worked in research all his life and had died in a car crash.” I did this way to often, I would hear or see a name and look it up in-case it came useful in my work. A couple came up to the bench I was on and sat down, I didn't mind as long as they didn't bother me, they did. The man kissed her, she kissed back and before long they were all over each other so I got up and resumed my wondering through the beautiful flowers.
